Nested Neighborhoods: Speculative Framework

Across the United States, a shortage of housing has lead to a crisis of affordability. Housing instability compounds the costs of elder and child care, a crisis of loneliness and the need to transition to efficient and renewable energy use and infrastructure. The shift to gentle density, missing-middle housing, accessory dwelling units and the end of single family home zoning creates an opportunity to solve for multiple crises at once.

Breaking out of the box of atomized suburban homes, a nested approach to infill housing allows us to bundle development across multiple properties, create more affordability, more wealth, more amenities and a better quality of life for existing and new households. Shared facilities and spaces connect neighbors, leverage resources and open new opportunities for healthy, diverse and desirable communities to grow.
